Hi.

I'm an American living in Switzerland, sharing my love of food, travel and wellness - from one of the most beautiful places on earth.

The many benefits of essential oils

The many benefits of essential oils

I've come to love natural remedies and natural products, and essential oils play a big role. I unfortunately suffer from migraines a few times a year. When I had my first really bad migraine in Switzerland, I sent Warren to the Apotheke (pharmacy) to find me some pain relief. Rather than coming home with some intense drug (as would be the case in the US), the pharmacist gave him a small bottle with an obscure Chinese label. To this day I don't actually know what is in it, but it is an essential oil blend that, when rubbed on the neck/temples, really does provide pain relief.

Over the years I've delved more into essential oils - using them for natural remedies, to scent home-made products or to purify the air in a diffuser. High quality oils are critical, so I usually use Young Living or doTerra blends.

In addition to headache relief, essential oils can be mixed for various remedies. My mom has the doTerra Family Physician kit, which I secretly long for (Christmas present?). It contains 10 different oils that can be mixed to cure a slew of ailments. I've found that even just applying lavender oil directly on bug bites helps itching significantly (try it!) or oregano oil helps kick a cough quickly. With our dog, we used to apply a few drops of rose geranium oil to her neck to help ward off ticks.

I've stopped using conventional cleaning products (you can use table vinegar for pretty much everything!) and conventional skin care products to avoid the harsh chemicals. So I often use essential oils to add a fresh scent. Lavender is definitely my favorite and I add this to my homemade deodorant and All-Purpose cleaner. There are also some great essential oil skin care products out there. For my birthday, my mom bought me the doTerra Reveal Facial system, which feels super luxurious and smells great.

We have two diffusers - one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom - and I have a different line-up of essential oils for each location. In the kitchen, I keep the more uplifting scents (Joy, Peppermint, Lemon) as well as those to help purify the air (Purification, Thieves). In the bedroom, I keep the more calming and mood-balancing blends (Lavender, Stress Away, PanAway, DragonTime). I love how just a few drops can infuse the entire room. It's also a much better option than candles, which are usually scented with artificial chemicals.

Here's 101 additional uses and benefits!
