Hi.

I'm an American living in Switzerland, sharing my love of food, travel and wellness - from one of the most beautiful places on earth.

La La Land with live orchestra soundtrack

I played the violin for many years back in my school days and have always loved a good orchestra. Despite that, spending an evening at an orchestra concert is not always high on my list.

However, Luzern is actually quite well-known for both their orchestra and their concert hall (KKL). But what I love most is that they offer concerts alongside movies - so while a film is playing on a huge cinema screen, the orchestra is performing the entire sound track live. It is honestly such a great way to get people to the orchestra and so incredibly impressive. They have a full symphony orchestra, sometimes with choir, that seamlessly blends in with the film. You honestly forget that there is a live orchestra playing - it's amazing.

Over the years, we've gone to several movie/concerts at the KKL - Gladiator, Interstellar, Star Trek, ET and last night we went to see La La Land! I've seen the film twice already at the cinema, but with the live orchestra it was fantastic. Makes me wish I could sing and dance! The weather was beautiful, so we started the evening with a walk into town (about 30 min), stopped by the Autumn carnival and then headed to dinner at the KKL's Restaurant Red. We've never eaten there before, but it was really good (albeit expensive) and had a fantastic view of the lake and the festival below - great for people-watching. I also like that all the ingredients used are local and ethically/sustainably produced.

Unfortunately at almost 32 weeks pregnant, my back is still killing me, so I had to use my jacket as a lumbar support pillow both at dinner and at the concert, so it wasn't the most comfortable few hours. But despite that, it was a nice opportunity for a date night out (which everyone tells me we need to take advantage of while we still can!). I love that Luzern has so many cool and accessible cultural experiences. In fact, next weekend we're going to see Riverdance in Zurich, so we're definitely making the most of these last few weeks before Baby's arrival!
